7  Common CP issues we can mitigate.

Using Good Engineering Judgement

Saving Money on CP System Construction

But get stuck with high electrical resistance – much higher monthly electric bill for rectifier use!  Get good advice before you build CP, to be cost-effective for both the Capital and the Ops Budgets!

Watch out for Mixing assets

A customer has large-diameter transmission pipeline, BUT also has gathering pipelines electrically bonded to that transmission line!  Their CP characteristics are far different.  Separate them from each other;

When you have “close-interval survey” performed, pre-assess first!

AND make sure you get high-value survey data.  It’s not just a report for the file; you need to learn the problem spots!

As part of facility CP work, check AC neutral wires for CP shift

You may be giving your CP current to the AC power grid’s neutral system, which includes every butt ground on a power pole for miles around.  Three-quarters of your CP goes to copper, and only a quarter to your pipeline or facility!  This can be studied as part of the CP design work too.

When building non-welded metal water line projects

MAKE SURE you have good electrical bonding between pipe sections!

You see interference from another operator’s CP

Don’t just turn up your power as the answer!  You’ve got to solve the interference problem technically, and cost-effectively.

For all your projects

Get good third-party inspection done for shop-applied and field-applied coatings!  These are the first line of defense against external corrosion.
